SIBU: Assistant Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapaee has proposed for a piece of land to build the first track for drag racing in Sarawak.

“I feel that the time has come for me to request from the state government to build a track for such purpose in Sibu. A piece of land has been identified (for the purpose) but further discussion with the state government and UCTS is needed.

“If successful, I will officially apply (to the state government) so that a track can be built in Sibu to provide an avenue for youths to showcase their skills,” said Dr Annuar, who is also Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health when opening the 5th edition of Sibu Drag Race at Old Airport Road recently.

The event was organised by PB Motorsport in collaboration with Nangka Service Centre and PBB Youth Sibu.

The Nangka assemblyman noted that since the event was rolled out, there had been sharp decline in cases of youths racing in villages and open roads.

He will also propose to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to include Sibu Drag Race in its calendar of events.

“In Sibu, we have the Sibu International BASE Jump, Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) and Sibu International Dance Festival (SIDF). So, I feel that Sibu Drag Race can be included into the calendar of events. I believe this will help to generate income for the traders and excite the tourism industry here,” Dr Annuar added.

Meanwhile, this year’s edition included a drift category besides motorcar and motorbikes.

PB Motorsport manager Zainudin Abdul Talip, who is also the event organising chairman, was also present.
